Create a Component Variation

  • Product Suppliers have the ability to create component variations
  • You can only create component variations if the component has a status of 'Active' or 'In Progress.'

Introduction

Component variations are used when you have a component that can be printed/decorated when used in certain products and not printed/decorated when used in other products.

For example, a carton sleeve is printed when used in Product A as it includes the product's marketing information, but it's not printed in Product B as a self-adhesive label is used for the product's marketing information.

  • They are not different components but one variation of the component includes the printing/decoration information (an extra section in the component's specification form) and the other variant doesn't.

Please note, a variation of a component will not be linked to any Bills of Materials and you will not be able to confirm/reject the component until is linked to a Bill of Materials.

(For more information, please see our guide on how to link an existing component to a Bill of Materials.)

Create a Component Variation

1. Navigate to the Components Hub, find the component that requires a variation and click on the component name or component ID to access its details page.

2. From the 'Options' menu at the top, select 'Create Variant'.

If you are creating a variation of a printed/decorated component, the specification form of the variation:

  • Will not have the printed/decorated section.

  • All the fields will be pre-populated with the information from the printed/decorated variant and cannot be edited. This is because you are not creating a copy, you are creation a variation of an existing component.

  •

If you are creating a variation of a non printed/decorated component, the specification form of the variation:

  • Will have the printed/decorated section.

  • The only editable fields in the specification form will be the printed/decorated fields. The rest of the fields will be pre-populated with the information from the non printed/decorated variant and cannot be edited. This is because you are not creating a copy, you are creation a variation of an existing component

3. Add the printed/decorated information (if creating a printed/decorated variation) and click 'Save' when you are ready to save the variation.

  • Click 'Cancel' if you don't wish to create a variation for the component selected.

4. Once a variation is created, you will be able to see and access its variant from the sidebar of the component's details page.

As they are the same component:

  • You cannot have more than 2 variations of a component (a printed/decorated and a non printed/decorated)
  • Variations will automatically sync. If you change something in one variation it will automatically change on the other (unless it's printed/decorated information).
  • If one of the variations is approved (and locked), the fields will be locked and un-editable in the other variation, even if this one is still 'in progress.

5. The component variation will:

  • Have a status of 'In Progress', regardless of the status of the 'original' variant.

  • Will have a brand new component ID.

  • Will not be linked to any Bills of Materials.

  • Be visible in your Components Hub
